Please act now to protect native forests and wildlife by abolishing the RFAs
Dear Minister Plibersek, Congratulations on your recent appointment as the federal environment minister. Being able to make strong, science-based decisions to take action to protect Australia's incredible plant and animal species is such an important responsibility, especially given the many threats to our environment which need to be urgently addressed. In the face of the crisis faced by many of our threatened species, there is so much opportunity to show leadership. Now is the time to act to protect native wildlife, and the places they rely on to survive. As someone who cares deeply about forests and wildlife, I’m calling on you to act swiftly to protect forests and wildlife by; - Abolishing the devastating Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs) which give logging a special exemption from federal environment laws, as recommended in Graeme Samuels independent review of the EPBC Act; - Updating outdated recovery plans, and urgently put in place new recovery plans for species listed under the EPBC Act to strengthen protections for wildlife and habitat; - Taking urgent action to support an immediate end to native forest logging across Australia as part of the federal government’s plans to tackle climate change; - Establishing an independent, national Environment Protection Authority with strong powers to ensure proper compliance with environmental laws; - Accepting and acting on the recommendations made in Graeme Sammuels independent review. The next 12 months will be critical, particularly for species like the Greater Glider which was recently listed as endangered under federal law. The links between climate change, logging, and bushfires are well known and understood. Logging is making native forests more flammable and prone to frequent and intense bushfires. Regional communities deserve to feel safe. The public has overwhelmingly voted for strong action on climate change at the recent federal election. Strong action on climate change must centre forest protection. Native forests not only store decades worth of safe carbon, but logging itself is a big emitter of carbon pollution. Protecting native forests is the key to a safe climate future. I whole-heartedly look forward to seeing you take meaningful action to address the extinction crisis faced by our precious plant and animal species - and the impacts of climate change on communities.
