Re: Contribution of Victorian native forest protection to Global Biodiversity Framework and Australia’s “30 x 30” Targets

As an Australian that cares deeply about Victoria’s biodiverse native forests, I am writing to you to support the formal protection of Victoria’s native forests as a key addition to Australia’s “30 x 30” nature conservation targets.
 
The Australian government has committed to the Global Biodiversity Framework, with a headline goal of protecting 30% of our land, freshwater and ocean ecosystems by 2030. This is a highly welcomed commitment and is critical for preserving nature and combating climate change, two of the greatest crises we face.
 
In May 2023, the Victorian state government announced the end to logging in state native forests by January 1st this year. The government promised to “deliver the largest expansion to our public forests reserve system in our state’s history.” To date, no formal protections have taken place and we strongly urge the delivery of this commitment. There are multiple pathways to reaching the “30 x 30” targets and the expansion of formally protected areas, including through Indigenous protected areas and national parks.
 
Victoria’s forests are home to an incredible array of flora and fauna, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth, including the Leadbeater’s Possum, the state’s faunal emblem. They contain outstanding universal values worthy of World Heritage listing. These forested ecosystems provide essential services, including carbon sequestration, water filtration, crop pollination, soil stabilisation and nature based economic pursuits. Despite their importance, our forests continue to face ongoing threats, including through inappropriate forest fire management activities. Immediate and decisive action is required to help protect and restore them. 
 
The Victorian government has already committed to protecting some forests in the state’s west, yet this promise remains unfulfilled. The end of native forest logging in state forest opens up the opportunity to formally protect 1.8 million hectares of forests from logging and mining. Such a move would also create the chance to implement and resource meaningful joint management and co-governance arrangements with rightful First Nations communities, including through active restoration of degraded forests.
 
The “30 by 30” targets represent a significant opportunity to lead by example on the global stage, demonstrating our commitment to environmental stewardship. With Australia hosting the Nature Positive conference in October, the international spotlight will also be on the Australian Government’s recent record of nature conservation. Formal protection of Victoria’s forests - now that logging is supposedly over, including the end of Victorian Regional Forest Agreements - would send a strong signal that Australia is acting in good faith on its nature conservation commitments.

Achieving the “30 by 30” targets will require a collaborative effort and I urge you to work closely with the Victorian government, First Nations communities, scientists and environmental organisations to formally protect Victoria’s native forests. By committing to these actions, we can safeguard our forests and their invaluable ecological, cultural, and economic benefits.
