I'm writing to congratulate you on taking a public stance of support for East Gippsland Shire Council's forestry position paper. We understand the paper is the fruit of a long and considered process by councillors who intently listened to the needs of the community and attempted to earnestly represent common ground. What they came up with was no mean task, and presents a good opportunity for unity around forests, if progressed correctly that is.

Of most importance to me are these points raised in the paper:

1. An end to clearfell logging. The rapid move to low volume, high value timber harvesting (as outlined by council) can only be achieved by first acknowledging the now widespread consensus that clearfell logging is bad for communities, the environment, and must end immediately. I also agree with Council on the important connection between ongoing clearfell logging and increased bushfire risk for East Gippsland communities.

2. Forests must be truly multi-use, not dominated by a single use - logging, at the expense of all others. A number of concerned community groups have been vocal about the impact of clearfell logging on their industries, including apiarist Ian Cane who took councillors on a tour of a clearfelled coupe where regeneration has failed. I also agree with Council on the importance of supporting tourism and recreation as a growth area for East Gippsland. This capacity is diminished with clearfell logging which continues to harm future economic prospects of the region.

3. Protection of biodiversity. Pursuing this outcome is an investment in the future of East Gippsland. Biodiversity supports crop pollination, buffers against pest migration, and makes ecosystems more resilient in the face of climate change. In short, our communities depend on biodiversity for their own survival. Protecting against deforestation is critical in this effort.

4. The protection of unburnt forests. These areas provide critical refuges for impacted species who escaped the Black Summer bushfires. They act as an ark for species recovery and enable biodiversity to become re-established again in other areas. At a bare minimum, unburnt forest must be protected from logging effective immediately.

5. Expanded government support for all affected communities experiencing transition, including Cann River and Buchan. Council notes the decline in annual timber production over the past 20 years and its impact on smaller East Gippsland communities not currently supported as part of the transition. I support council's call for all these communities to be included as part of transition efforts.

As part of your own ongoing advocacy for council's forestry position paper, and as my federal representative for Gippsland, I ask that you write a letter to the Environment Minister Lily D'Ambrosio and Premier Daniel Andrews outlining these critical asks in council’s position paper. 
 
I look forward to your action on this issue as East Gippsland faces difficult and significant regional changes.
