Native forest logging must end now
Dear Premier Andrews and Ministers D'Ambrosio, Thomas, and Pallas, I am writing to you because I care deeply about the protection of Victoria’s precious native forests and wildlife. I was shocked and appalled by the recent revelations from the ABC that: - VicForests has been illegally logging forests in our water catchments and that the Environment Department refused to take legal action - VicForests hired a private investigator to harass and intimidate academics and citizens speaking out against logging. - A new report has shown VicForests are failing to regenerate forests after logging, and that 1 in 3 areas won't grow back, and the Environment Department still failed to take legal action - Protection areas set aside for the Greater Glider in East Gippsland are still under imminent threat of logging despite legal requirements to protect them In 2019 your government acknowledged that native forest logging in Victoria is not sustainable and announced a transition out of logging starting in 2024, and finally winding up by 2030. Recently the WA state government announced a 2-year transition to end native forest logging in Western Australia. This is what could have been achieved in Victoria. Instead, for the last two years logging has continued to destroy forests - against public support for an immediate end to logging - and in breach of environment laws. The Environment Department has failed to act for years to curb the unlawful logging crisis in our forests. Now more than ever, your government must abolish VicForests, and immediately end logging. The devastating 2019/2020 bushfires which wiped out more than two-thirds of the forests in eastern Victoria have also added to the urgency for logging to end, on top of the impacts of climate change, and the extinction crisis faced by wildlife which depend on Victoria’s forests to survive. I was also alarmed to hear you recently pushed through changes to laws which deregulate logging. We need stronger, not weaker laws which protect our precious forests. The continued destruction of forests has no social license, and your logging agency frequently breaches logging regulations. The transition cannot be dragged out until 2030, especially in light of the ABC investigations. I call on your government to act and immediately cease logging and transition the industry, and protect all remaining forests now to safeguard them from the imminent threat of logging.
