Safeguard Our Climate, Not Polluter Profits
CC: Honourable Primer Minister Anthony Albanese, Minister for Climate Change & Energy Chris Bowen, Minister for Resources Madeleine King, and my local elected representative: Australia is now facing a climate crisis. The last eight years have been the hottest on record. And in that time, communities have been hit hard by climate-fuelled bushfires, extreme weather, and floods. After nine years of delay and denial on climate, your government was elected last year with a mandate to take serious action on the climate crisis. A crucial way for your government to act on this mandate is to adequately strengthen Australia's Climate Safeguard Mechanism, to ensure it delivers deep emissions cuts from large industrial polluters this decade. Climate scientists have made it clear we need to make the deepest emissions cuts before 2030 to have a hope of maintaining a safe climate. We will not achieve this if the big polluters are allowed use of unfettered offsets to dodge making genuine emissions reductions. I therefore call on the Albanese government to ensure the reformed Climate Safeguard Mechanism does the following: 1. Achieves at least a 43 percent reduction in total emissions (from 2005 levels) from facilities covered under the Climate Safeguard Mechanism by 2030. 2. Delivers real reductions in emissions by ruling out the unfettered use of ‘offsets’. 3. Does not allow special deals for new coal, oil, and gas projects or for so-called ‘emissions-intensive and trade-exposed’ industries. Communities have been doing a heavy lift when it comes to tackling the climate crisis. It’s time for the big polluters to pull their weight. Your decision on this reform will leave a long legacy. Failure of major fossil fuel companies to do their fair share in meeting Australia’s 2030 target will put more of the burden onto community members, workers already battling intensifying climate impacts on the job, and other sectors of the economy, such as transport, farming, and small to medium businesses. Community members are awaiting your response on how you will strengthen the Climate Safeguard Mechanism and make Australia’s biggest polluters do their fair share by committing to the reforms I have listed above.
