Call for a national ban on native forest logging
I am writing to you regarding the serious threat industrial logging poses to Australia’s globally-significant native forest carbon sinks and the opportunities that forest protection holds for ending extinctions and tackling climate change. There is an urgent need to protect Australia’s forests. This could play a decisive role in Australia’s efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C, safeguarding our climate and critical ecosystems for future generations. Recent carbon reports commissioned by concerned environment groups have highlighted the shockingly high CO2 emissions generated by logging of native forests in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales. The Victorian government's recent announcement that it will end clearfell logging by Jan 1 2024 is a long awaited and welcome decision which will end decades of exploitation and division over forests. Now is a critical moment that needs to be seized. It is time for other states to follow suit, and for your government to take action to legislate banning native forest logging and the commercial sale of native timber in Australia. Forests are worth more than woodchips. Protecting Australia’s public native forests could prevent 9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. From now until 2050 - that would prevent around 255 million tonnes of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere. That’s an emissions saving equivalent of converting 900,000 Australian homes to solar. There is an opportunity for adequate reform to take place within the Environmental Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act. States should no longer be exempted from federal law. In the environment ministers' own words “Australia’s environment laws are broken”. It’s time to fix them and keep the promises made in your ‘nature positive plan’ media statement of December 2022. Extinctions will continue to happen on your watch if logging continues to consistently destroy iconic threatened and endangered species habitat and the unceded lands of First Nations people. We urge you to do the following: - Immediately abolish the Regional Forest Agreements - Build on the precedent set by the Victorian and Western Australian governments of ending native forest logging by 2024 and set a date in the near future for all native forest logging to end across Australia - Work with and support the states to deliver fair transitions for affected workers and communities For the forests, climate and Australian people.
