Concerns About Defence Agreements with US & Nuclear Weapons
I am concerned about the Force Posture Agreement and other defence agreements with the United States. These appear to remove Australia’s ability to make its own independent decisions about whether to go to war – and to permit US ships, submarines and bombers armed with nuclear weapons to operate out of Australia. They also commit Australia to giving the United States secure bases from which the US may conduct a war, as well as full logistical support for its military operations. Nuclear Weapons Non Disclosure Agreement I understand that the Australian government has the policy of not requiring the US to disclose whether submarines, ships and bombers are armed with nuclear weapons. Defence Department secretary Greg Moriarty apparently admitted that, while the "stationing of nuclear weapons" in Australia was prohibited under the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty, that treaty did not prevent visits by the US bombers. "Successive Australian governments have understood and respected the longstanding US policy of neither confirming nor denying the presence of nuclear weapons on particular platforms.".' AUKUS & Nuclear Armed Submarines Also the AUKUS deal , apart from its huge cost and the commitment to store nuclear waste, appears to allow submarines armed with nuclear weapons into Australia. The Australian Defence website states: 'From as early as 2027, AUKUS partners will have a rotational presence at HMAS Stirling of one UK and up to 4 US, nuclear-powered submarines. This rotational presence of UK and US nuclear-powered submarines at HMAS Stirling will be known as Submarine Rotational Force – West (SRF-West)'. This appears to open the door to visits by US nuclear armed submarines under the non disclosure of nuclear weapons policy by the US. I therefore request that you work to ensure that the government: Withdraw from the AUKUS deal which is increasingly unpopular with the public. Anti-Trump sentiment is growing in Australia as the US becomes dangerously unpredictable. A first step might be to initiate a wide ranging Parliamentary review of AUKUS to correct what has been a deeply undemocratic process. Demand any foreign planes, boats and submarines entering Australian land and waters are nuclear free. Sign and ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear weapons as promised in 2018. Please see The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons' (ICAN) website to find out how to get more involved. If you have already signed the Parliamentary Pledge, many thanks! I would be very interested in hearing your opinion about these concerns and how you can help.
